Fixed dental work such as implants, crowns and bridges is generally a private-pay service. Your lever is the saving, not your insurer. Even so, we prepare your paperwork so you can claim what is possible: a potential insurer contribution for removable dentures, and the tax deduction as an extraordinary expense (außergewöhnliche Belastung).
For fixed dental work the ÖGK generally pays no contribution. For removable dentures (full or partial) through a contracted dentist you pay, since 1 May 2026, a co-payment of 30% of the ÖGK tariff cost (20% for people exempt from the prescription fee); the ÖGK covers the rest of the tariff, not the rest of your bill. Implants are funded by the ÖGK only in defined medical hardship cases, subject to prior approval.
Under EU rules (Regulation 883/2004 and the Patient Mobility Directive 2011/24/EU), planned treatment elsewhere in the EU can be reimbursed up to the amount the same treatment would have cost within the Austrian public system. Because there is no Austrian public tariff for implants, there is typically little to nothing to reimburse on implant work.
Dental treatment costs, including those incurred abroad, can be claimed in your annual tax assessment (Arbeitnehmerveranlagung) as an extraordinary expense, with an income-dependent threshold (6, 8, 10 or 12% depending on income). This is a deduction from your taxable base, not a refund, so the net benefit is a fraction of the outlay.
You receive a detailed, Austrian-formatted invoice with an itemised list of services and a diagnosis, a Heil- und Kostenplan (treatment-and-cost plan), and your findings and X-rays, in German and English. With these you can apply to the ÖGK for reimbursement of services covered by the tariff and claim the extraordinary expense with the Finanzamt.
